Everyone in the marketing biz has an opinion on the annual Super Bowl ads, and your local radio is probably filled this AM with experts offering their views — you may be one of ’em.  Today, I’d like to throw my 2 cents into the mix.

I’ve been fortunate to be part of an annual gathering with friends to watch the game; a good group who enjoy football & the friendships we have.  They are a group of people from all different walks of life — an average bunch of game viewers — which lends itself to some pretty unbiased reactions to Super Bowl ads.

Airing a spot in the Super Bowl is not your typical advertising situation:  it seems to be more about the spectacle of being there & being seen.  (Don’t get me wrong: a real stinker of a spot can really ruin your client’s day).   So in my opinion, gauging a great spot is all about the immediate reaction of the masses, and my Super Bowl party friends are just the group.

Super Bowl favorites – hands down, the Radio Shack “The 80’s Called…” spot got the biggest positive reaction:

Next up, Volkswagen’s “Engineer Gets His Wings” (…until the “rainbow” close):

No one could resist Budweiser’s “Puppy Love”:

Dannon Yogurt got good reviews for a great surprise ending:

Super Bowl stinker
– On the downside, Butterfinger’s was the creepiest & got the biggest “eeeew!” of the group:

There were plenty of other reactions to all the spots, both good & not-so-good.  Want to check out the rest of the ads?  You’ll find plenty of sites devoted to reviews, opinions, and more.   Here’s a simple site to watch the ads in relatively ‘opinion-free’ way
